Used Motorcycle Inspection Guide
Buying a used motorcycle is a great way to save money, but some models have been better treated than others. If you don’t perform a full inspection, you may find yourself paying for a previous owner’s negligence. That is why Team Winnebagoland Powersports Center has created this guide to inspecting a used motorcycle.
Outer Appearance
The condition of a used motorcycle’s exterior can give you a lot of clues as to how well it was treated by previous owners. For example, if the front and back wheels are misaligned, this often indicates that the motorcycle was in a serious crash at some point. Be on the lookout for any dings, dents, and scratches. These can tell you how frequently the motorcycle has been dropped. Deep scratches and dents indicate that the bike hit the ground particularly hard.
Maintenance Marks
Next, take a look at how well the interior components fit together. Inspect the used motorcycle’s nuts, bolts, valves, brakes, rotors, drain plugs, injectors, carburetors, tires, chains, and throttle bodies. Misalignment can negatively impact performance, and usually points to poor maintenance.
Check Important Systems
The fuel system, coolant system, filter, and electrical system are all vital for keeping a motorcycle running well. First, make sure the fuel tank is free from flaking metal and discolored fuel, then take a look at the coolant system. Round off your inspection by checking that the spark plug and air filter are still in good condition.
Mileage Check
While checking a used motorcycle’s mileage can be a big help when trying to determine how much more life it has in it, there are a few caveats to consider. First, what is considered “high mileage” differs depending upon the type of motorcycle. A sport bike with 25,000 miles on it may be ready for retirement, while a touring cycle at 25,000 miles often has a few good year of riding left in it. Second, proper maintenance can extend a bike’s lifespan. Two used motorcycles of the same make, model, and mileage may be in very different conditions depending upon how well they have been maintained.
